Located in the southeast of West Africa, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with a total population of 182 million, accounting for 16% of Africa’s total population. Nigeria’s GDP in 2014 was about $568.50 million. Since 2003, Nigeria’s economy has maintained steady growth with an average annual GDP growth rate of 5%-7%. It has maintained an average annual growth rate of 6.8% in the past decade. By 2016, Nigeria’s GDP had surpassed that of South Africa, ranking first in Africa and becoming the 26th largest economy in the world and accounting for more than 3/4 of the total GDP of West African countries. It is highly influential to other countries in West Africa and all over Africa, including Sudan, Libya, Algeria, Chad and Egypt. Even in the whole African continent, Nigeria also has an important international status. It is one of the countries with the fastest economic growth in the world. As an Opec member, it has the largest oil reserve and output in Africa. It also possesses nearly 40 billion US Dollars of foreign exchange reserve with sufficient payment capacity and strong market purchasing power.
Nigeria is China’s third largest trading partner in Africa as well as China’s second largest export market in Africa. It is also the largest project contracting market and the third largest investment destination. The trade volume between China and Nigeria accounts for 39 % of the total trade volume between China and west Africa and 8.1% of the total trade volume between China and Africa. The areas of cooperation between China and Nigeria cover transportation infrastructure, electric power, energy, mineral resources development, telecommunications, agriculture and chemical industry. The mode of cooperation has also developed from single projects to industrial park cooperation, which has completely changed the cooperation that has always been dominated by trade in goods and the scope of cooperation have been constantly expanded.With the development of China’s economy, China’s mechanical and electrical products have gradually become the leading products in the trade between the two countries. Nigeria has been paying close attention to China’s "One Belt and One Road" initiative and has used it to strengthen cooperation with China: Nigeria exports raw materials to China, China exports goods and services to Nigeria and raises funds for infrastructure projects in Nigeria. Lagos is home to 80% of Nigeria’s business. Lagos is Nigeria’s economic, financial, industrial and logistics hub, the best place for businesses to get a foot in the West African market.
