Market Overview:
South Korea is the second largest importer of agricultural products in Asia after Japan. In South Korea, livestock breeding industry is the second largest industrial production field after rice production, mainly including pigs, cows, sheep, chickens and so on. Limited by the small territory and other factors, beef, pork and milk need to be imported in large quantities every year to meet the needs of the domestic market, except chicken and eggs can basically guarantee self-sufficiency.
In the recent 20 years, livestock production in South Korea has developed rapidly, and the number of pigs in stock has been doubled from 4.528 million in 1990 to 9.881 million in 2010. Over the same period, cattle, goats and horses are all increased, and the number of chickens has been doubled from 74.463 million to 149 million.
From the perspective of livestock production, meat, eggs and milk all increased from 1990 to 2010. Among them, meat increased by 1.2 times from 949,000 t to 1,983,000 t. Eggs increased from 397,000 t to 602,000 t with an increase of 51.6%. Milk had the least growth, at 20.1%.
In terms of the scale of breeding, there were 169,000 farmers (farms) in South Korea in 2011. With the scale of breeding expanded, however, the scale of chicken breeding did not change much with 3,403 chicken farmers in 2011. From 2005 to 2011, the import amount of livestock products in South Korea showed an increasing trend. The import of meat products increased by 1.4 times and the import of dairy products increased by 1.8 times. South Korea still relies on a large number of imports to meet its needs.
