Bangladesh has serious water management problem, which is mainly reflected in the conflict between the increasing demand for water and the diversification of water utilization. Irrigation of crops and aquaculture have led to increased demand for water in agriculture. Clean water is in short supply because of insufficient water flow from the Ganges river, chemical pollution, saline intrusion in coastal areas and arsenic contamination. Moreover, the availability of fresh water is seasonal, depending largely on rainfall in the wet season. The annual cycle of floods and droughts profoundly affects the state of rivers. The surface water used by 90% people is also contaminated with arsenic. Arsenic pollution has killed one-fifth of Bangladesh population.
