UNION OF MYANMAR
In 2011, a civilian government came to power and appointed the new President U Thein Sein. Under his leadership and strong mandate to run the country, many major reforms and foreign policies were made. This include anti-corruption, currency ex-change rate, foreign investment laws and taxation were embarked.
Foreign investments increased over 660 per cent from US$300 million in 2009-10 to a US$20 billion in 2010-11. Large inflow of capital results in stronger Myanmar curren-cy, the government relaxes import restrictions and abolishes export taxes. Despite current currency problems,Myanmar economy is expected to grow by about 8.8percent in 2012.
Of the total foreign investment injected in over two decades, China's investment has now topped with US$9.6 billion, overtaking Thailand which once stood US$9.57 billion in the foreign investment line-up previously. The Chinese investment was raised by its increased involvement in building of deep seaport, hydropower plants, exploration
of natural gas and exploitation of mineral resources and transport.
